We are delighted to have been awarded a grant from the Highlands and Islands Environment Foundation for the first stage of our peatland restoration at Bac Dubh. This will involve building leaky dams on the Cliff Burn to hold back water and re-wet the peatland, cutting channels to divert water flow onto the peatland, and blocking peat drains. We’re engaging the environmental consultants River Revivers and Alba Fiadhaich to help us and we will also be getting volunteers involved. It’s an 18 month project and the objective is to kick-start the restoration of 10 hectares of peatland that have historically been cut for fuel and are therefore draining and releasing carbon. If we can restore the full 10 hectares it will sequester approximately 17,200 tonnes of carbon, as well as adding hugely to the biodiversity of Bac Dubh.
We are immensely grateful to HIEF for awarding us this grant which will be a huge boost to our rewilding efforts at Bac Dubh!
